The Political Developments in the Balkans before the Second World War and Turkey

Abstract

The Balkans became one of the important shared areas at the end of the First World War. The Entente States wanted to establish here their own authority and domination, and succeeded this to some extent. As it would be unavoidable to arise disputes between the winning states and the losing states as well as the new founded states like Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia, in a short time alliances began to be made. Italy, Germany and the Soviet Union which didn‘t lose their interest in the Balkans tried also to influence the small states here. Turkey developed an attitude towards the preservation of the status quo and the peace in the region and with this aim wanted to extend the initiatives she launched with Greece also to the other Balkan states. Between the two world wars, almost the whole Balkan states embarked on quest of alliance with the feeling of insecurity.
