Abstract

Founded in the 19th century, there is an improtant role of the French schools in the Ottoman Empire. In that period, French is highly effective and has become the most widely used European languages in the Ottoman empire. To explain this subject, the effects of the outnumbered French school’s effects could be mentioned. The number of French schools, places for learning French culture and language, have been incresed especially at the 19th century and it’s known to play an active role in educational acitivities.  

This study includes studying of the Saint Joseph French School, established in the 19th Century at Kadıköy, that’s a district of İstanbul. History of school, its architectural properties and its contributions to the İstanbul urban silhouette have been investigated.
